Just a few years ago, my life was very different than it is now. After 3 hospitalizations for uncontrollable pain, I was diagnosed with several different conditions. After what seemed like endless appointments with specialists, physical therapy and many medications, I was declared disabled. I was forced by my body to give up the job I loved, working in the emergency room at a local hospital, which my social life was also tied up in. It became more than difficult to leave the house due to the pain and anxiety the situation had created. Then the friends, who have no idea what to say to you, stop calling or coming over for a visit. Soon after that, the invitations to meet with friends stop. I felt lonely, isolated and depressed. And then it happened….
An adorable little girl came into my life like a ray of sunshine on a warm spring day. She was so full of happiness, life and unconditional love. The more time we spent together, the more I began to feel the blanket of depression and anxiety lifting. She lifted my spirits and my soul in a way that helped me see that my life didn’t end, it just changed. With that knowledge, I was able to make the adjustments necessary to move forward and start living life again. She truly uplifted my spirit and my soul. Because of this little girl, I am now living my life in a way that has much more meaning than ever before.
Her name is Nala, and she is my dog. Nala was rescue puppy from a dog fighting ring. The moment I saw her picture on the local Humane Society website, I was in love with her. I know that some people won’t understand how a dog or pet can change your life, but I do. She rescued me as much as I rescued her.
